JOHNSON, Vt. – The Johnson State College men's lacrosse team fell to Green Mountain College 15-13 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Wednesday afternoon.
The Badgers drop to 0-5 (0-2 NAC) on the season while the Eagles improve to 1-6 (1-3 NAC).
After five scoreless minutes, the Badgers struck first at the ten minute mark on a goal by Travis Benson (Underhill, Vt.). Ethan Wehse (Stowe, Vt.) made it 2-0 on a goal assisted by Kyle Picard (Hyde Park, Vt.). The Eagles took the lead with three straight goals by Chris Surdam, Jay Levesque and Dominic Wright, but Picard netted his second to tie the game at three with a minute and a half left in the quarter. Surdam gave Green Mountain a 4-3 lead after one with a goal with 14 seconds remaining.
A pair of Brandon Bellissimo goals and one from Will Durant pushed the Eagle lead to 7-3 midway through the second. Picard got one back with two minutes left in the half, but Deven Rogers answered less than a minute later to give Green Mountain a 8-4 lead going into the break.
The Badgers took the lead back in the third quarter, rallying off five straight goals to take a 9-8 lead. The Eagles answered back with two minutes remaining to tie the game back up at nine going into the fourth.
The teams traded goals through the fourth, with a Benson goal giving the Badgers a 13-12 lead with a minute and a half remaining. The Eagles tied it 20 seconds later on a Durant goal, then received two goals from Dominic Wright to take the 15-13 victory.
Chelsea Wimble took the win in goal for Green Mountain with 19 saves saves. Patrick Bell (Charlestown, R.I.) made 12 stops in the effort for the Badgers.
