NORTHAMPTON, Mass.– The Johnson State College volleyball team fell to Smith College 3-0 in a non-conference match on Friday night.
Leading 3-1, Xela Miller served up seven straight points, giving the Pioneers (2-2) an advantage from the beginning. Smith maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, downing the Badgers 25-9.
The Pioneers opened set two with four kills to jump ahead 5-1. After back-to-back points from Johnson (0-3), Caleigh Johnson rattled off four service aces to give her team an 11-3 advantage as Smith would go on to win 25-10.
A kill from Kaitlin Boucher (Barre, Vt.) brought the Badgers within eight at 17-9, but Smith closed out the set with eight consecutive points to sweep the match.
Boucher led Johnson with three kills and two aces, with Elyssa Kornbrath (Manchester, Conn.) adding a kill and three assists.
The Badgers will take on Dean and Gallaudet in a tri-match on Saturday, September 9th at Smith College.
