Mariners Defeat Badgers 3-1

LYNDONVILLE, Vt.-The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's volleyball team came up short dropping their match 3-1 Saturday afternoon against Mitchell College in four sets of action.

For the Badgers, it was captain Nikola Knapova who led the way with 17 kills and 12 digs through four sets of action. NVU-Johnson opened up the first set trying to get an advantage on Mitchell. Both sides battled until a Knapova service aces and Mitchell College errors allowed the Badgers to take an early 10-6 lead. The Badgers continued to control the first set leading 17-9 when Knapova blocked an attack from Bree Rudolph. Freshman Ashley Emery closed out the match impressively recording two of her six kills on attacks from teammate Aleesa Smith. Smith recorded a team best four service aces on the afternoon.

The Mariners responded after set number one by seeking out the second set by a 25-23 tally. Porsche Johnson had a strong performance recording nine kills and had two service aces for the Badgers. But it was the Mariners that controlled the pace taking sets three and four by scores of 25-22 and 25-20. Mason Lores continued to be strong for the Badgers adding 32 assists and eight digs.

With the loss the Badgers fall to 5-2 on the year.


Women's Volleyball will travel to Castleton University on Tuesday, September 10 for a non-conference match. The match begins at 6:00pm.
